Try These 7 Motivational Top Tips for When You Can’t Face the Gym

Don’t worry, it isn’t just you. We all feel lacking at times when it comes to motivation. How can you rekindle that enthusiasm when it comes to exercise, and how can you make it stay?

As it happens, there are ways and seven of the very best are below.





Grab a friend

Nothing beats working out with a friend, constant encouragement, companionship and the camaraderie that comes from knowing you’re in this together. Banish those self conscious lonely exercise sessions and take a friend along for the ride, you’ll be much more likely to want to go and a lot more likely to stay.

PICK The right gym

An obvious but often overlooked issue for those who might struggle to motivate themselves to visit the gym; is it the right one for you? Visiting a fitness centre is great if you're honed, ripped or have been going for years, but for some it isn’t that simple. It can make us feel self-conscious, awkward and perhaps a little like we are being judged - although that is almost never the case. It is important to be in a space where you are comfortable and happy, and if you aren’t, then have a think about why. A lot of gyms now offer classes, dedicated times or entry requirements for like-minded people. BE Ambitious but keep it real

If you’re going, that’s amazing and if you are sticking with it you deserve respect, of course you’ve got goals, much like everyone else at your gym, but don’t forget to differentiate between long and short term targets. It might be an impressive physique, it might be just wanting to climb the stairs without feeling breathless, small or big goals are all goals, aim high, but be realistic to avoid becoming discouraged.

Keep track of your pRogress

We have all seen those ‘before, during and after’ pictures on social media. Keeping track is a big deal. You’ll see visual proof of the positive changes you are making to yourself, and it will feel...well, simply amazing. There are lots of useful apps that make tracking and monitoring fun and simple. You are working hard, and seeing results, what could be better? 


That latest episode from your current boxset, your favourite smoothie or a shopping spree to buy that thing you had your eye on. Do it, right after your visit to the gym.

You’ve heard the phrase – dress for success. Look the part and usually you’ll feel the part too, and if you’re feeling the part; the impulse to carry on will always follow :) Getting yourself a new gym kit can do wonders to motivation levels and also to your confidence, which is what being fit and healthy is all about.
